Bespoke beauty: the Kerastase Paris hair treatment

Here it is you moment of Zen

by Patti Pietschmann

Kérastase Paris’ has created mane-changing bespoke haircare treatments – Fusio-Dose Hair Lab™–a non cookie cutter, no one size fits all customized care for hair that costs just $30 and up at select salons such as Juan Juan in Brentwood, California where fellow blogger/stylist Whitney Postjuan visited for the personalized treatment.

Kérastase Fusio-Dose™ Hair Lab (in-salon treatment)kicks off a new era of personalized hair care by turning the salon into a high-tech treatment laboratory. The procedure personalizes styling with a uniquely prescribed and freshly fused formula.

The steps to luscious locks start he Hair & Scalp Profiler Camera which zooms into the hair fiber up to 600 times, allowing the stylist to complete a full fiber analysis checking hair for lack of shine, dryness, and breakage. The stylist is then able to create an ultra-precise diagnostic and identify a primary and a secondary need of the hair fiber, which is used to create a tailor-made treatment solution at the Hair Lab. The interactive, ‘soda fountain-like’ station consists of four concentrates (to address the primary need) and five powerful hair injections/boosters (to address the secondary need) that are mixed to offer over twenty treatment combinations. This transformative and completely customized “beauty-shot” treatment works in just five minutes and targets a range of hair care needs including smoothing, density, strength, nourishment, radiance, and more.

· Concentraté Oléo-Fusion- for nourishing and softening
· Concentraté Pixelist- enhances color radiance
· Concentraté Vita-Ciment- reconstruction
· Concentraté Densifique- gives tone and  more bounce to each strand

It costs from $30 at select Kérastase Salons

Learn to speak clearly with confidence

With phonetics lessons by a master on Skype

Andrew Firta, a young Los Angeles entrepreneur and master of phonetics has created  a brilliant, much-need and very unique company called Accent Confidence that focuses on individual sounds  and proper pronunciations that many people struggle no matter what their ethnic background. The course can also be a big  confidence booster for people who do a lot  of  public speaking. Sessions are held on Skype but house calls are available for an extra fee. You can  contact Andrew for arrangements and more information. (I just posted that Google cartoon cause I like it so much, hope you do, too).

The website explains that the program can take as few as eight weeks to complete and that it  begins with an initial assessment where patterns in your speech are identified. The program is then modified to suit your specific needs. As the course moves forward, you can expect constructive feedback and re-evaluation along with accent modeling and articulation instruction.

About the program: The Compton P-ESL Program, developed by the Institute of Language and Phonology, has been in use since its inception in the late 1970s. For more information on this program, to hear before and after samples, and to try out the online practice materials, visit the Institute of Language and Phonology’s website at

Andrew Firta’s background

California born and bred, Andrew Firta, is founder/owner of Accent Confidence. He earned his MA in linguistics from California State University, Northridge. His concentration in phonetics and phonology in graduate school is a testament to his boundless enthusiasm for the mechanics of speech and foreign accents. He is a certified P-ESL accent modification instructor and has taught ESL both in front of the classroom and as a private tutor. As a linguist, he has been trained in many aspects of language well beyond the scope of English pronunciation. The main objective of his services is to promote speech clarity through speaker awareness, fostering confidence to communicate clearly and effectively. He is currently pursuing a second master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and hopes to expand his purview to include the treatment of dysfunctional speech and language disorders.

Not only is this a brilliant idea for foreigners with heavy accents or people with speech impediments,  it’s also valuable for thespian’s who might need to learn a particular accent for a role. Or in my case perhaps help me tone down my New York accent.

Stop those pesky roots from showing

best shot of pattiWith Redken’s new revolutionary Root Fusion kit

By Patti Covello Pietschmann

Imagine coloring your roots effectively at home without having to spend your valuable time at the salon. Well you can thanks to Redken’s new  take-home root retouch solution that is prescribed by your colorist. Imagine not having to run back to the salon every time gray rears its ugly head or black or brown roots show through the blond tresses. And it takes just one to two weeks before regrowth begins to show at the hairline and roots, causing one in four women to retouch their roots at home as a quick fix before their next salon service.

“My clients are always on the go and whether they’re 21-or 65-years-old, nearly all of them have struggled with grays and roots that appear before their next scheduled visit,” says Tracey Cunningham, Redken celebrity colorist. “A colorist’s worst nightmare is having our client come in with an at-home job gone wrong, but we also understand that schedules don’t always allow clients to visit the salon when they ideally should.

With Redken gets right to the root of the problem  providing just enough mixture for one application to the part and hairline in in a single-use kit that is only available when prescribed by a professional during your in-salon haircolor service that includes one set of gloves, an instruction sheet, the low-ammonia Professional Root Retouch color prescribed by the colorist, developer, one professional grade brush and a mixing bowl.

There are 27 Root Fusion shades to  match all of Redken’s permanent color brands, including Color Fusion, Color Gels and Chromatics. Redken recommends that you apply Root Fusion application  two to three weeks following, and before the next, professional haircolor application. Root Fusion Kits cost  is $25 and  at Redken authorized salons nationwide.

In memory of Roger Pietschmann

Husband, father, brother who fought a courageous battle but  died way too youngRoger Rich Mona

The Bee Gees couldn’t have captured our sorrow and loss any better:

“I can think of younger days when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow.
And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend a this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.
I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by
We could never see tomorrow, noone said a word about the sorrow.

Cosmetic surgery tops the charts

Not only  in Hollywood. The eternal quest for youth hits a new high with more folks opting for cosmetic surgery than ever.DSCN0526

Thinking about face-lift or other cosmetic surgery? You’re not alone. Let’s face mature ‘millennials’ are all looking for that Fountain of Youth and ways to turn back the hands of time so we can well, look like a millennial. So when a press release arrived stating that nearly 60 percent of consumers now say they are considering a cosmetic treatment, up from 30 percent just three years ago, I had to pass it on so you’d know you aren’t along in your quest for youth. The statistic are from an ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures. “Cosmetic medical treatments continue to grow in popularity,” said ASDS president Naomi Lawrence, M.D. “One of the keys reasons why is because patients trust their dermatologists and the advanced techniques and cutting-edge technologies that will improve their appearance.”

For the fourth year in a row, dermatologists ranked as the No. 1 of 14 factors influencing the decision to have a cosmetic procedure. Consumers also rated dermatologists as the physician of choice in eight of the 10 treatment categories. Of the 11 factors influencing the selection of a practitioner, consumers rated highly the choices involving physician expertise. The specialty in which the physician is board-certified, the level of the physician’s license and referral from a physician ranked as three of the four top factors.
“Board certification offers patients peace of mind that their dermatologist has the expertise and training to provide the care for their skin health and beauty needs,” Lawrence said. “Our ASDS members are proven skin experts who are committed to meeting the needs of their patients.”

The survey also uncovered the reasons why people are turning to cosmetic procedures, with wanting “to feel more confident” as the top reason. Next were wanting “to feel more attractive” and wanting to “look as young as I feel or better for my age,” duh!

Feeling fat? Get over it with these 10 suggestions

How many time do you wake up with same lament, “I feel fat?” Many men, women and even children do and then they do nothing about it. Well they can. Next time you look in the mirror and see those bulging thighs, hips, belly etc., can’t fit in your jeans or just feel fat, take these steps:

  1. Go a prudent, healthy diet starting with breakfast that day and continue at lunch and dinner.
  2. Take a hike, walk, bike ride and continue regularly whenever you can (if permitted by your health).
  3. Join a gym such as Crunch–a quirky chain that actually makes exercising fun. Once you plunk down the membership fee you will feel obligated to go regularly, and should.Join a gym such as Crunch which makes exercising fun
  4. Substitute snacking on  high-cal foods with fruit, smoothies (easy to make in a blender with leftover fruit but don’t add sugar), popcorn or a handful of almonds, pecans or walnuts (heart-healthy foods).
  5. Get enough sleep,  many people with insomnia gain weight.
  6. Keep a happy, positive attitude about everything. Depression causes weight gain.
  7. Control the amount of alcohol consumed.
  8. Treat yourself to a special dessert only once or twice a week and make it a small portion.
  9. Dress up nice, wear makeup (women), fix your hair , stay well shaven (men and women) because when you look good you want your body to complement the outfit.
  10. Talk to your doctor about it if you are seriously overweight and then if you can afford it consult with a nutritionist.

Never feel fat again.

Bill Cosby sex fiend or what, Whoopie says she don’t care

So Whoopi  Goldberg says he’s innocent ’til proven guilty, his accusers feel otherwise. Did he give drugs to women to loosen them up for sexual acts, at this  point only Cosby knows and his accusers who may or may not be fibbing, but if they aren’t telling the truth, why now? The Statute of Limitations has run out in most cases.

I interview Cos back in the day and I was young and most say cute, even pretty and more, but he didn’t hit on me or even indicate any sexual deviate-ness. He was a gentlemen and very funny. But then there were people around too, lots of them. I’m not saying he didn’t do it, but like Whoopi says we need to know all the facts. Sound a little like maybe he did, though. Readers what do you think?

According to today’s, “Bill Cosby has admitted to getting prescription Quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with, newly released documents dating back to 2005, that arose from a civil lawsuit filed by Andrea Constand — one of the dozens of women who have publicly accused the comedian of sexual assault. The records were made public Monday after The Associated Press went to court to compel their release.”

For a very funny man the situation Cosby faces just isn’t very humorous.

When psychologist Carol Klein’s previous life is revealed in vivid detail through hypnosis, she begins an arduous quest filled with twists and turns to verify her recent past as the heiress-activist, Iris Middleton Paulson. With the aid of an Asian physician-mystic and her skeptical, politically ambitious attorney-fiancé, this mismatched team builds a fact-by-fact case to prove her claim. A landmark trial sets off a firestorm as riveting testimony from authorities in science, medicine and religion puts our fundamental understanding of life and death at risk—shattering beliefs in a final mortality. The ensuing trial threatens to upend legal, medical and religious institutions worldwide.

An alarming new research study concludes there is an, “increasing trend for distribution of sexually explicit content produced by younger children using laptop webcams.” The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) and Microsoft participated in the study, examining 3,803 images and videos, of “youth-produced sexual content” depicting young people and uploaded by the children or covertly recorded by a third party. The report, “Emerging Patters and Trends Report #1 Youth-Produced Sexual Content, was published on March 10, 2015.“Children producing and distributing child pornography is a profoundly disturbing trend,” said Dawn Hawkins, Executive Director, National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCSE). “We are in the midst of a public health crisis on pornography.  Every public official from the president on down, public health advocates, social leaders, and every parent must work to solve this crisis.  We know that the long-term consequences to our children involved with pornography are monumental and can include problematic, even criminal sexual behaviors, and a host of anti-social activities,” Hawkins said. The study established that 85.9 percent of content depicting children aged 15 or younger was created using a webcam and 93 percent featured girls. While much of the content appeared to be knowingly created for websites, the study indicates that 100 percent of the content was shared to third party websites, which cannot be traced. The researchers noted a specific concern that the young people featured, “took no steps to conceal their identity or location, even in many cases using their real names.”  The study also found that 667 of the images and videos evaluated featured children 15 years and younger, and of this group, 286 were 10 years or younger.  The researchers said their report confirms an alarming trend of young children producing and distributing explicit content online.Hawkins said, “The sexualized culture created by adults has primed children to become exploited by pornography.  The flood of unchecked TV indecency, movies such as “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and sexually exploitive magazines such as Cosmopolitan, grooms children for the pornified culture that awaits and preys on them.”

??????????I asked a dozen men (will explain why no women) if they knew what 5 millimeters means in reference to brake pads. None of them knew.

Why the survey? Because I am a woman who went by herself to a Center BMW in Van Nuys and bought a pre-owned certified car. It really  doesn’t even matter what model but if you care, a 2011 128i. After handing the finance man my check he whipped out papers for me to sign.  I had spent the whole afternoon at the dealership and was tired but I initialed everything. Turns out I initialed that it was okay that the brake pads on the car were worn down to a 5 from a 12.

Well 1,500 miles later I needed new brake pads which now were worn down to a 2 ½ and a 3, in that short time. I don’t drive much and the car only had a little over 14,000 miles on when I         bought it. I of course called Center BMW to discuss this, after being armed with information from mechanics and brake dealers. They refused to budge telling me I drove hard or drove it a lot in mountains.  To which I refuted and also said with only 1,500 miles on it how could the brakes go all the way from 5 to a 2 ½ and 3, unless it was mis-stated on the pre-owned certification sheet or read wrong or worse.

The certified pre-owned used car sales manger told me the cost would $1,000 to replace the brake pads and rotors,  two other places quoted $500 and $600. After much Italian (me) style hot-blooded arguing he relented and said they would do it for $600 complete, which now tired of it all I did, but still thinking about getting a lawyer or going to small claims court.

Anyhow folks don’t let this happen to you. If I had known the brakes were worn that much I wouldn’t have bought the car or I would have asked them to lower the price. Never again. I am a bit soured on BMW this point having called and written to the BMW of North America with no reply back.

Re: why only men were surveyed, if they didn’t know how could us women know, although I’m sure some do.

Take a look at the BMW certification process and the checklist that allows cars to be “certified” with just 5mm of pads left–anything less than that would require them to be replaced before the car is sold. The points are :1) that BMW officially allows cars to be certified (which certainly implies that they are as pristine as possible) when at 5mm the brakes are more than 60% shot; 2) pretty suspicious that the stealership would find that all the brakes were a 5 when 5 is the absolute minimum at which pads do not have to be replaced for certification (which of course means the car will need a brake job soon and probably more income for the dealership to do it.

Dom Perignon the man who didn’t invent Champagne?

Here’s an eye-opener from The Widow Clicquot by Tilar J. Mazzeo– an excerpt on Dom Pérignon and the invention of champagne.

“Dom Pérignon was justly famous for his superb skills as a blender — but his legendary wines did not have bubbles. This is one of the great ironies — we might even say great deceptions of wine history, for conventional wisdom tells us that Dom Pérignon was the delighted inventor of champagne. He is supposed to have quipped to one of his sandal-shod brothers, ‘Come quickly! I am drinking the stars!’ Yet it only made sense that Dom Pérignon wanted to rid champagne of its bubbles. There was no market for sparkling wines yet. In France, nobody wanted them. So, over the course of the next decade, Dom Pérignon dedicated himself to experimenting with ways to stop the development of bubbles.
Dom Pérignon

“In fact, the idea that Dom Pérignon invented champagne was always just imaginative marketing. It was a brilliant but misleading sales pitch. The popular legend has its origins in a late-nineteenth-century advertising campaign, started at a time when sparkling wine was already big business. In her book When Champagne Became French, scholar Kolleen Guy shows how it wasn’t until the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris that the region’s champagne producers saw the marketing potential and started printing brochures about Dom Pérignon. From that point on, the role of the celebrated monk became a truism.

“The truth is that no one in the seventeenth or even the eighteenth century associated Dom Pérignon with the discovery of sparkling wine. His friend Dom François, writing the biography of the famous monk, never mentions bubbles, and even the abbey’s lawyers in the nineteenth century — looking for things to claim rights to — didn’t think they could convince anyone that Dom Pérignon had anything to do with making wine sparkle. As the lawyers knew, the monks at Hautvillers didn’t even start bottling their wines until the 1750s.

“For those who enjoy the romance of the Dom Pérignon legend, there is even worse news. Wine historians now claim that champagne did not even originate in France. Champagne was first ‘invented’ in Great Britain, where there was already a small commercial market for sparkling champagne by the 1660s …

“Monks like Dom Pérignon knew that local wines could sparkle, even if they considered it a nuisance. And scientific and historical records show that the climatic changes of the little ice age — those decades of unusually cold weather that stalled the fermentation process in the winter and allowed for the natural and unwelcome springtime emergence of bubbles — had been disrupting agriculture in Europe since the end of the sixteenth century. …

“Even if Dom Pérignon and his predecessors did not discover champagne, by the end of the seventeenth century the royal court at the Palace of Versailles certainly had. King Louis XIV of France now wanted nothing more than bubbles in his wine. Suddenly winemakers on both sides of the English Channel were scrambling to find ways to make champagne sparkle, and in order to support his taste for bubbly, the king gave the city of Reims an exclusive license to sell their wines in bottles. It was the beginning of a regional monopoly that would survive, in one form or another, for centuries. …

The Art of Shaving Balm for kissing smooth faces

image005I recently introduced my husband Richard to The Art of Shaving–a chain of upscale men’s grooming shops that sell an eponymous supply of products that keep the male skin sexy, smooth and kissing sweet. An extremely fussy consumer, Richard surprised me by raving about the entire collection especially the sandal-wood scented shaving soap and the steel razor and accessories. And now he has a new Art of Shaving product to sample for me, THE ART OF SHAVING: OVERNIGHT BALM that nourishes the skin by intensely hydrating through the night. It’s made with Lavender Essential Oil, and a touch of Roman Chamomile Oil, it revitalizes the skin. Its customized blend of Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil helps protect the surface from further drying as you sleep.

The Art of Shaving Overnight Balm retails for $45 and is sold at all The Art of Shaving locations and online at

We are attention whores…

A play full of follies opens at Falcon Theatre

This is a play you need to see

‘Parallel Lives’brings provocative performances with wit, musings an morals

A review  by Patti Pietschmann

DSCN1478Parallel Lives opened last night (Aug.26)at the Falcon Theatre to  a sell  out crowd. Considering it is one of the best ‘way off Broadway’ shows I ever saw, that’s understandable. You have to see the show to  find  the answer. Although you  probably  know by  now.

Authors Mo Gaffney and Kathy Najimy’s script takes us…
